A master's job is
never done, it lives on through the ages.
The annual Installation of Officers was held on December 14, 1997 and after being installed the new Master remarked on what he hoped to accomplish in this year. After the ceremonies, the officers and their wives formed a receiving line and dinner was served in the dining hall.
Four days after installation there was a double first degree...so it was going to be this kind of year! hehehe At the stated meeting in January there was a 50-year presentation to Bro. Donald S. Boyd.
At the stated meeting in March it was announced that there was going to be a work party at a Brothers house who had just had surgery and could not tend to his place. It was also decided that the Lodge pay for the balance of the new aprons and collars, the biggest part of the funds had been privately donated by several Brother's.
In April it was reported that the electrical wiring and the attic fans were completed and that it was OK'd by the Temple Association to work on the air conditioners. It was decided to have a float in the Rodeo Parade and the theme this year was the the gold rush days.
Bro. J. M. Oakley received his third degree in Columbia Lodge 388 located in Columbia State Park. It was a fun day with a great turn out that was rich in history.
In May there was a 50-year presentation to Bro. Leslie Arnold Doolittle. It was announced that there had been 138 people who had paid at the annual Cowboy Dinner and that it was a big success. A resolution was read increasing the amount of Charity that could be given to one person and a financial resolution was read about the formation of a finance committee to invest our funds.
In June there was a 50-year presentation for Bro. Warren Everett Bushey and at the stated meeting that followed both of the previous resolutions passed by motion and vote. On June 25th the Lodge opened for a special election to correct the possible mistake on the ballot of a person who had applied to receive the degrees of Masonry in Clovis Lodge. The ballot was cast and the person was elected to receive his degrees.
In July the Lodge was informed that the Grand Secretary was coming to Clovis Lodge to talk to the Brethren about the formation of a Research Lodge. This was being done at the request of several brethren of Clovis Lodge.
In the stated meeting in August the volunteers who had worked so hard and diligently on the Kitchen remodel were congratulated in open Lodge. The Kitchen had been almost completely gutted and then redone in a months time.
In September it was decided by motion and vote to fund the $300.00 plus dollars necessary for the Clovis Police Departments Dare Program to obtain a special pair of electronic glasses that would simulate the feeling of driving while intoxicated. These glasses are used by the Dare Program out in the community to try and teach kids the importance of staying sober.
In October it was decided to ask for a dispensation for being able to walk in the Christmas Parade while wearing our Masonic Regalia. The dispensation was granted and I have to tell you that walking is a far site warmer than riding in the Christmas Parade! hehehe
On October 11th, Bro. Carlos Reyes received his third degree in a ceremony in Hornitos Lodge 98 located in Hornitos, Ca. This Lodge room is one of the oldest in California and the entire area is rich in history. It appears that Hornitos was a popular place for bandits to hang out in in the old west!
On November 7th, Bro. Frank Gann, Past Master of Clovis Lodge, received the coveted Hiram Award. There was a nice dinner before hand and a large crowd in attendance.
At the annual Roll Call dinner in December, the Secretary read the names of our departed brethren in this year and they were being portrayed by our newest Master Mason's who were wearing white robes and carrying a candle. As there names were called, the person portraying them extinguished their flame. It was a very nice evening.
And so closed one of the busiest years in recent history for degrees. We were working as many as three nights a week trying to stay up with the candidates. With the momentum of Clovis Lodge and with the new rules passed by Grand Lodge concerning proficiencies, I think they were trying to kill us! hehehe
Brethren lost in this year were Bro's. George Lester Finfrock, Raymond Edgar Oliver, Elmer Taft Kirby, Richard William Oliver, Otto Harold Higgins, Robert Vernon Anderson, Edward Eugene Mc Crory, Edgar Elmo Kenneaster, Donald Leroy Fester, Tommy William Higgasson, Fred Markus Past Master of Clovis Lodge, Warren Paul Studer, John Karr Young and Wayne Vukson.
